[Original of Truck House] When we truck drivers buy oil, we can see numbers like 15w-40 or 20w-50 on the outer packaging of the oil, and words like API CH-4API CI-4 can also be seen below. These are the labels of the oil, so what do these labels mean?

● 　SAE 15w-40 What does all this mean?

SAE in the front is the abbreviation of American Society of Automotive Engineers, and the viscosity index of engine oil is formulated by them and is universally used. 15w-40 in the back represents the viscosity index of this engine oil. At the same time, this label also shows that this engine oil is a multi-grade engine oil, and the current civil engine oil has no previous single-grade engine oil, that is to say, it can be used all year round, so let’s take 15w-40 as an example to illustrate the meaning now.

"W" means winter. The smaller the number 15 in front of it, the better the low-temperature fluidity of the oil. 15W means that the oil can be used in the environment above minus 20℃. The number 40 at the back represents that the kinematic viscosity of this oil ranges from 12.5 mm/s to 16.3 mm/s at 100℃, and other viscosity indexes also have corresponding standards, which is by no means what some people say can be used at 40℃.

● 　What does API CH-4 mean?

API is the abbreviation of american petroleum institute, followed by CH-4, C, and H after diesel oil. S stands for gasoline engine oil, and n stands for the grade of the gasoline engine oil. If it is marked as SN/CF, it is a general-purpose gasoline and diesel engine oil.

According to different letters, the grades of engine oil can be arranged, and the lower the letter, the better the performance of engine oil. And the engine oil with the lower letter has more examples of meeting the emission standards. Now, because of the post-treatment, the vehicles discharged in the fifth national standard generally use engine oil above CI level.

● What does ACEA certification mean?

ACEA is the abbreviation of European Automobile Manufacturers Association, which is the inspection and certification standard for automobile lubricating oil in European automobile manufacturing industry. From the technical requirements, it is higher than the American API standard mentioned above. Many of our big-name engine oil packages will see the relevant certification of ACEA, so you can carefully observe and compare them.

ACEA’s certification of heavy diesel engine lubricating oil is divided into four grades, namely, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7 and E9. Similarly, the higher the number, the higher the grade of engine oil. Generally, big-name engine oil will certify these corresponding grade standards at the same time. You can carefully observe the marks on the barrels.

● 　So how do we choose?

Generally speaking, when choosing engine oil, you should first refer to the requirements in the vehicle manual. For example, this car requires the use of 15W-40 CH-4 engine oil. In practice, we can not only choose the engine oil with this grade and viscosity according to the instructions, but also raise the engine oil level by one grade, that is, we can use CI-4 engine oil with 15W-40 viscosity, which will better protect the engine and promote the emission standards.

If your local temperature is below-25℃ in winter, we can choose engine oil with viscosity of 10w-40, which will make the cold start smoother and ensure that the engine oil can be pumped to the friction surface during cold start. Just remember one thing, the last 40 remains the same, and the small number in front has no effect.
